If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard that from a business owner, I might not need to work anymore. 😂
And yes, this is probably the face you’d get from me.
Here’s something I’ve learned in 27 years of working with business finances:
Just because something has been done the same way for years doesn’t mean it’s been done correctly.
I’ve encountered financial practices that continued for years simply because nobody questioned them.
Transactions categorized incorrectly. Loan payments recorded entirely as expenses. Customer deposits treated as earned revenue before the work was performed. Financial reports that looked perfectly reasonable until someone started asking questions.
And here’s what concerns me most.
Those mistakes don’t necessarily announce themselves.
Bank accounts can reconcile. Reports can look clean. The business can continue operating.
Meanwhile, the owner may be making important decisions based on information that doesn’t accurately reflect what’s happening.
When I ask, “Why are we doing it this way?” I’m not trying to make anyone uncomfortable.
I’m trying to determine whether there’s a legitimate reason for the process or whether it’s simply a habit nobody has challenged.
Sometimes the answer confirms everything is being handled properly.
Other times, that one question uncovers years of problems.
Experience has taught me that the most expensive words in business can be, “We’ve always done it this way.”
So here’s my question for business owners:
When was the last time someone challenged the way your financial processes are being handled?
And more importantly, would you welcome the questions?
“But we’ve always done it this way.”
